Principal’s Graduation Report 2009-2010
September 6, 2009 came with mixed blessings for everyone. Teachers came to school with much anticipation and expectations, parents brought their children with the same mixed emotions and the children came not knowing what to expect. However, one thing was clear- we were in this together and we were going to make the best of it. From September onward we worked hard to improve a number of areas to the best of our ability.
With the scripture text found in Psalm 37:23 “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his ways” as our guiding passage for the year we set out, to attempt under God, to bring some much needed changes to our school.
The first area of concern that we attempted to work on was the discipline of the students. While we will not blow our own horns, we ask you to judge whether you have seen any appreciable changes in the discipline of your students here at Bethel Elementary.
For the school year 2009-2010 we held two weeks of prayer. The Fall Week of prayer was led by Pastor Andrew Philbert, former Principal of the Bethel Elementary school. The Spring Week of Prayer was led by Pastor Jason Theodore, leader of the Bethel S. D. A. Church Mission. We say a very special thank you to both men and invite for them God’s continued guidance as He provides them with growth and blessings in their ministry to others for Him.
During the fall semester we conducted the IOWA test of Basic skills to our students. In April the second part of the test was completed and we are pleased to inform you that 83% of the student body from Kindergarten to grade 8 showed an increase over the first testing period in September.
As a result of the establishment of a Pupil Service Department in the Office of education at the Northeastern Conference, we were able to conduct academic testing of our students and we now qualify for Special Education Services which the Board of Education will provide for our students who need it. The services that are being provided will allow our students to be pulled out of the regular class and receive individualize help where it may be needed.
Here at Bethel we continue to teach the basic and relevant subject areas that our students need- English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Music, Computer, Bible, Physical Education, Art & Craft, Spanish, Reading and Legal Studies for the 7th and 8th graders.
We have taken our students on monthly field trips to support the work that we have been doing in the classroom. Our end-of-year trip was a day at Lake Compounce.
During the month of May five of our non-Adventist families brought their children to our church to have them presented to the Lord. Also during the month of April we attended the Rally Day activities that were held in Westchester. Our students under the directorship of Ms. Claudine Faison stole the show with their outstanding musical performance. Finally in the month of May Bethel Elementary students participated in the annual Science Fair and Exhibition. All of our students received recognition but AnnMarie Geigher, a student of grade 1, placed third in her category. Congratulations to AnnMarie and her parents.
Bethel Elementary school continues an aggressive recruitment program to boost enrollment at the school. Parents of Bethel are invited to come by and see what we are doing, get answers to your questions in an attempt to have your child/children in the school that you have supported continually.
During the month of November we launched an effort to raise funds to establish a scholarship fund for our students. On May 30, the Wellington and Jennie Clarke Scholarship fund was established from the sacrificial giving of the members of the Bethel Church. At present, $20,000.00 dollars have been collected and ear-marked for the scholarship fund.
Today our chairman Mr. Frantz Pierrre will present to our Valedictorian, Ms. Lashana Hamilton, one term’s tuition to Northeastern Academy, or any other Adventist High School of her choice. So far we have given $1000.00 dollars in scholarship money, and we invite those of you who have been our constant supporters to help us to continue to provide scholarships to students who may need it.
Bethel Elementary is poised for continued success under God and we invite you to join us in our efforts. Our library is being made ready for the new school year. The furniture for our new science lab is on site and efforts are afoot to have it ready for the start of the New Year. A resource room is also being prepared for our students who will be needing special education services. The services of a Social Worker were begun during this school year and we expect that it will continue in the New Year. The Northeastern Conference has provided us with two additional Elementary trained teachers for the New Year to add to the complement of teachers that we will need to make Bethel Elementary a top of the line elementary school.
While the school has had a modicum of success this year we have suffered the loss of one of our stalwart and long serving teachers –Mrs. Eulena Moses. Mrs. Moses has served the school for twenty years, carrying the needs of the school to the end of her days here on earth. In August of 2009 she became ill and was never able to return to us as we had hoped. While we suffer the loss of her calm, meek and gentle spirit we accept that God has taken a flower from His garden to create a wonderful bouquet that heaven can enjoy. May she forever rest in peace in the bosom of her Savior.
Financially, Bethel Elementary School has successfully carried its weight with the support of our Church at large. From August to the present Bethel is current with its remittances to the Conference, and we have successfully under God managed to pay for all of the expenses of running the school.
As Principal of the Bethel Elementary School, I apologize if we have erred in any decision our action that we have taken during this school year. Consequently, I thank all of the parents who have worked with us this year for their commitment to what we do. May God continue to keep you strong as you work for the well being of His children.
I wish to thank all of the dedicated and hardworking people who have helped to make this year a success-Ms. Lorraine Blake, my administrative assistant, my teachers- Mrs. Unice Hibbler, Ms. Leshawn Anderson, Mrs. Paula Deane-Ryan, Ms. Gladly Morency, Mr. Rory Richards and Mrs. Rosie Worrie whom we lost early in the school year to illness. Thanks to our auxiliary teachers, Mr. Samuel Livingstone, Ms. Olivia Senor, Mrs. Elizabeth Viales and Mrs. Grace Nembhard. Special thanks to the various individuals who have served as aides during the course of the year-Ms. Candace Innis, Ms. Tameeka Gaskin, Ms. Janielle Hibbler and Ms. Cristy Creighton. I wish to wholeheartedly thank our volunteers who gave of their time, and their efforts consistently-Mrs. Joan Roberts, Ms. Claudine Faison, Mrs. Olga Manns and Mr. Rohan Creighton. Special thanks to our dedicated honorary Bethelite, Sister Brown and our Social Worker for the 2009-2010 School Year Ms. Denese Ferdinand. Special thanks to the former pastor of the Bethel Elementary Church, Dr. Eldeen C. king, for his usual commitment and support of Christian Education.
Finally, ladies and gentlemen I say the greatest thank you that words can suggest or human tongue can express to the various groups of people who have undergirded this school in all of its efforts during this school year. To Ms. JoNise Caleb and her team of alumni, I say thanks. To Mrs. Manns and her fundraising Committee, I say thank you. To Mr. Mark Parkinson and his Home and School team, I say a special thank you and finally but by no means least, I say a thousand thank yous to the Chairman of the Bethel Elementary School Board, Mr. Frantz Pierre and all board members for their dedication and commitment to the Bethel Elementary School.

Celestine Creighton, Principal M.A.,  LLB. B.A.
